Haus des Meeres reports record 2009 visitor numbers

By Thomas Hochwarter

Vienna’s Haus des Meeres (HDM) saw record visitor numbers last year, it was announced today (Thurs).

HDM head Michael Mitic said 352,877 people visited the aqua terra zoo in Vienna-Mariahilf last year.

"This is an increase of five per cent compared to 2008 - our previous record year in which we beat the ‘magical’ 300,000 limit for the first time," he said.

Mitic hailed the visitor numbers as a "great success", adding that the HDM was mostly financed by ticket sales since it was not owned by the state or the city of Vienna unlike many other top attractions.

"Snake-stroking" specials for children are one of the institution’s most popular attractions

Demand is also high for guided tours through its back rooms and underground tunnels at the HDM, which is housed in a Nazi-era anti-air raid bunker.
