Schönbrunn Christmas tree goes to zoo animals

A 20-metre-tall spruce Christmas tree in front of Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace has been given to zoo animals, it has been announced.

The tree, which was taken down yesterday morning (Mon), was used as feed and toys for the elephants and the rhinoceros at nearby Vienna zoo on the Palace grounds, zoo director Dagmar Schratter said.

The announcement comes after city authorities said last week that a 27-metre-tall Christmas tree on the square in front of Vienna’s city hall was to be made into bird houses and mobiles to hang from the ceilings of school classrooms.

City residents who want to get rid of their Christmas trees can turn them in at 470 collection points across the capital until 17 January.
