Town puts new twist on getting rid of Christmas trees

A Lower Austrian town has put a new twist on getting rid of old Christmas trees – by setting up a Yuletide tree-throwing competition.

Authorities in Eichenbrunn in Mistelbach district said the event on 10 January is open to men, women and children who want to show how far they can toss a Christmas tree.

Each contestant gets to throw a used Christmas tree three times with the person throwing the longest distance in each of the three categories – men’s, women’s and kids’,  getting wooden cups as prizes

Locals said today (Tues) that they hoped the record throw of 12 metres set at last year’s inaugural event would be broken.

The entry fee is three Euros apiece for men and women, but children will be able to compete free of charge in the event which starts at 1:30pm.
