A rabbi ended up in hospital when an angry Palestinian attacked him during a Hannukah celebration in Vienna.
Police said the man had insulted and then attacked Rabbi Dov Gruzman, the head of the Lauder-Chabad school, and then almost bit one of his fingers off on Vienna’s Stephan square in the inner city on Saturday evening.
He was arrested after the assault and the rabbi was taken treatment at a city hospital.
The Austrian Jewish Community (IKG) criticised the federal government today (Mon) following the attack and linked it to recent discussion of the construction of minarets following a recent referendum in Switzerland on the subject.
It said: "The Austrian government is obliged to take action against radical Muslims, terrorist sympathisers and neo-Nazi provocateurs rather than to lead a discussion about the advisability of the construction of minarets.
"Austrian Muslims have the same right as others to the public exercise of their religion so a discussion of minarets is not necessary."
