Haneke shocker voted best film of decade

A film by controversial Austrian director Michael Haneke has been voted best film of the decade by The Times.

The disturbing 2005 "Cach�" starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil � which was released as "Hidden" on English-speaking markets � topped the London newspaper�s Top 100 Films of the Noughties list released today (Mon).

The movie tells the story of a successful and happy French family whose life goes out of control when they receive videotapes showing their home.

"Cach�" triumphed over "The Bourne Supremacy" / "The Bourne Ultimatum" from 2004 and 2007 which was named in second place by the newspaper�s arts and culture editorial team.

"No Country for Old Men" by the Coen brothers (2007) was third.

Haneke � who had success with films such as "Funny Games" and "The Piano Teacher" � earlier this year won the Palme D�Or (Golden Palm) at Cannes for "Das wei�e Band" (The White Ribbon).

The film � which tells the story of a German town shortly before the First World War � has been nominated by Germany in the Best Foreign Film category for next year�s Oscars. The black-and-white production was largely subsidised by the country�s film industry.

Haneke, 67, is regarded as one of Europe�s most influential directors today.
