Imam courses at Vienna University

By Thomas Hochwarter

Courses for Muslim imams are set to start at Vienna University this Friday, it was announced today (Mon).

Head lecturer Ednan Aslan said the target of the new course "Muslims in Europe" was to prepare Islamic clerics for their tasks at Austrian mosques.

Aslan added 81 people had applied for the 30 places on the course.

He explained: "There are currently no courses for imams in Austria. This is the reason why most of them are assigned from other countries. We want to prepare imams and pastors for what they will be confronted with here."

Courses will deal with the law, education and politics in Austria, Aslan said.

He added the plan was now to offer courses at other universities soon.
