Austrian newspaper feud enters Google Maps

By Thomas Hochwarter

The "Austrian media war" seems to have reached the next stage as misleading information about a newspaper’s office has emerged on Google Maps.

Users of the popular service – which displays directions and street maps in every corner of the world – are baffled about seeing the word "Österreich" on a spot in Vienna-Neubau’s Lindengasse where newspaper Kurier has its headquarters.

Österreich is not only German for Austria, but also the title of a rival daily. Founded in 2006, the newspaper – which has its offices in Vienna-Innere Stadt – has managed to oust Kurier from third place in reader figures.

Österreich won a court case against an individual who, shortly after it had started in business, filed legal action because the publication had the same name as the country.

Users of Google Maps – after opening an account – can place company locations like restaurants, cinemas and shops on its maps, which inevitably means the one or other wrong information gets posted every now and again.

The "Österreich" link in Lindengasse on Google Maps leads to the Wikipedia page about Austria.
