A Porsche once owned by late right-wing political leader Jörg Haider has gone up for auction online, it emerged today (Thurs).
Klagenfurt-based firm Cavinnash is offering the metallic blue 911 Targa on its website www.cavinnash.at for the next ten days.
Auction organisers expect the winning bid to be much higher than the 320-horsepower car’s market value and believe a fan of the former Freedom Party (FPÖ) leader will snap it up.
Businessman Mario Kimmer, who organised the auction, said he initially planned to give the sports car to his "Haider fan" wife.
But he decided on an auction when she turned out to be less than enthusiastic about the present.
Velden-based Kimmer said Haider – who founded the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ) party after falling out with influential FPÖ personalities in 2005 – owned the Porsche, which has 58,700 kilometres on the clock, between 2002 and 2004.
Haider died when he crashed his VW Phaeton at high speed after a drunken night out in October 2008.
The provincial government of Carinthia set up a museum in honour of the late governor which, according to reports, attracted far fewer visitors than expected. The exhibit – held in a former wartime air-raid shelter – features personal items once owned by Haider and will run until 26 January 2010, the day Haider would have turned 59.
