A veteran court reporter has released a book on Austria’s most spectacular crime cases of the past 20 years.
"Von Udo Proksch bis Josef F. – Prozesse, die Österreich bewegten" by Doris Piringer – court reporter for Graz newspaper Kleine Zeitung – focuses on trials that dominated the headlines in the past two decades.
The book features scandals like the insurance fraud by Vienna businessman Udo Proksch, who was jailed for life after six people died in 1977 on freight ship "Lucona" he had insured for around 15 million Euros.
Proksch was a notorious playboy and a darling of the capital’s "high society" – a similarity to Jack Unterweger, who was sentenced to life in 1974 for strangling an 18-year-old girl before being released after just 15 years. Artists and journalists lauded the novels and theatre plays Unterweger wrote in jail, telling authorities he was the perfect example of a rehabilitated prisoner.
Unterweger was found guilty of murdering at least eleven prostitutes in Austria, the Czech Republic and America. He hanged himself in his cell the night after the sentence was announced in 1994.
One of the most recent cases Piringer followed was the incest drama of Amstetten.
"Von Udo Proksch bis Josef F. – Prozesse, die Österreich bewegten" by Doris Piringer has been published by Molden Verlag (ISBN 978-3-85485-245-2).
