By Lisa Chapman

Three Viennese students have won study places at Chinese universities after coming second in a "Chinese Bridge" competition in Chongqing, China.

Maria Baumgartner, 17, Ingeborg Prause, 17, and Andre Ringdorfer, 14, all won a stipend for a year’s study at a Chinese university for having finished second in the team competition of the event testing knowledge of the Chinese language and culture.

The three Austrians study Chinese at Vienna University’s Confucius Institute.

Baumgartner, who was second in individual competition, won a second stipend for a year’s study at a Chinese university, and Ringdorfer, who was third in individual competition, won a second stipend for half a year’s study.

Thirty-five teams with a total of 105 students from 29 countries participated in the competition at the end of October.
