SPÖ women's organisation celebrates 100th anniversary

By Lisa Chapman

The Social Democratic (SPÖ) women’s organisation has marked its one hundredth anniversary with a meeting at party headquarters on Vienna’s Löwelstraße.

SPÖ Women’s Minister Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek said at the meeting yesterday (Thurs): "We can be proud of what we have achieved."

But she got the most applause of the evening when she went on to criticise her own party for having failed to fill its women’s quota for leading positions and called for sanctions if it continued.

SPÖ Chancellor Werner Faymann thanked the organisation for its political activity and said SPÖ women had been "a very important supporter of a social and just Austria" at a time of economic crisis.

Vienna SPÖ women’s councillor Sandra Frauenberger said no one should forget how much effort would be necessary to achieve full equality for women.
