Vienna zoo to have 'golden autumn' pumpkin festival

By Lisa Chapman

The zoo on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna is going to host a "golden autumn" pumpkin festival for children and adults from 17 October until 1 November.

Beginning this Saturday, kids will be able to scrape the insides out of pumpkins and fill them with pieces of apples and carrots before watching them be fed to elephants. Young visitors will also receive a tour of the elephant house and be able to sample goodies at its fruit exhibit.

There will be "pumpkin goodies for zoo animals" workshops for children on 17, 18, 24, 25, 26 and 31 October and on 1 November at the zoo.

An exhibit of old and long-forgotten species of fruit and pumpkins will take place for two weeks at the elephant house, beginning this weekend.

Lower Austrian bio-farmer Karl Zwickl will have a stand there, selling apples and pears as well as such special products as marmalade, fruit brandy and apple-bread.

Kids will also have the opportunity to carve Halloween faces on pumpkins and take them home.

There will be a handicraft workshop in the big-cat house where, on Saturdays and Sundays, kids will be able to make nice autumn decorations of various kinds.

The cost of attending the festival will be 15 Euros for children, including admission to the zoo, and 14 Euros for adults, the usual price of zoo admission.

More information is available on telephone number (1) 877 92 91 – 500 from 8am to 5pm on weekdays.
