Earmark reveals McDonald´s ´Swiss cow´ is Austrian

By Thomas Hochwarter

McDonald’s in Switzerland used a cow from Austria in their "100 per cent Swiss beef" campaign, it emerged today (Thurs).

Nicole Schöwel, the fast-food chain’s spokeswoman for Switzerland, admitted they used the same animal that had been used in advertisements in Austria. McDonald’s worked on the picture so a spot on the cow’s belly had the shape of Switzerland. What the firm forgot, however, was the animal’s earmark featuring the Austrian country code "AT."

The image was also used in Austria – where the spot on the animal’s belly had the shape of Austria.

Spokeswoman Nicole Schöwel apologised for the blunder, admitting the firm "simply forgot" about the earmark, stressing the error did not mean that meat from foreign countries was used in burgers in the respective countries.

Schöwel said McDonald’s Switzerland had used meat supplied by Swiss farmers for more than 30 years, adding it would buy Italian meat if there were shortages.
