Tank deal in Slovenia: lobbyist Riedl convicted

The armour lobbyist Hans-Wolfgang Riedl was sentenced to three years in jail due to corruption last Friday. Mr Riedl was accused of having smuggled bribe money (several hundred thousands Euros) to Slovenia in 2007.

The money was supposed to promote the allocation of a 278 million Euros contract of a light wheeled tank.

The jury, which was supervised by Judge Marion Zöllner, also sentenced the defendant to an additional fine of 850,000 Euros, as he did not tax the received commission properly.

The second main defendant, the Austrian-Canadian entrepreneur Walter Wolf, did not appear in court due to health problems. He is accused of criminal organisation together with Mr Riedl.

However, Mr Riedl was acquitted in these regards. If this acquittal should remain in power, Mr Wolf would be granted a full discharge as well.

The three co-defendants Hans-Peter W., Wolfgang A. and Wilfried K. were acquitted of the charges of industrial spying and tax evasion. Both the lawyer and the prosecutor appealed against the verdict.
