Egg fraud: three years in jail

A 51-year-old man from Styria, who had faked the label of eggs and sold them as organic eggs, was sentenced to 39 months of imprisonment in Wiener Neustadt yesterday (Wed). The verdict is not final.

The trial started three days ago in the Regional Court in Wiener Neustadt. At around 17.00 yesterday the man was sentenced to 39 months in jail due to serious fraud.

The defendant had imported eggs 260,000 from Poland and sold them as Austrian eggs. He also declared 180,000 eggs as organic eggs, although they were not organic. Furthermore, the defendant sold 150,000 eggs that came from a company, closed down due to a salmonella infestation.

The public prosecutor’s office became suspicious when it turned out that the man had forged documents in a civil case he had started. The civil case was stopped and the criminal procedure due to serious fraud followed.
