Austrian plans memorial for Princess Diana

Austrian plans memorial for Princess Diana

Radio Vienna reporter Ewald Wurzinger started an unusual project: a bust of the British princess Diana (+1997) is now being produced. The memorial will also need an appropriate place in Austria.

Lady Diana Spencer was and remains an icon of humanity. After her divorce from Prince Charles she became a star in the media.

15 years after her deadly car accident in Paris the 26-year-old reporter Mr Wurzinger wants to give the "Queen of hearts" a memorial. He asked the Viennese sculptor Wolfgang Karnutsch to build a bust of white marble and a memorial plaque.

"For me it is very important to create a memorial for this great, unforgotten personality. Despite of her power, money and fame, Diana never stopped being human and down-to-earth. This should be stimulating for many people in times of the economical crisis so they start reflecting. The memorial will become a place of pilgrimage for many fans in Austria", said Mr Wurzinger.

Mr Wurzinger has been admiring Lady Di since he was a child. He has also contacted the members of the Spencer-family, "just to let them know about the memorial."

Sculptor Mr Karnutsch is pleased with his task and regards it as a great challenge. He will use marble of Laas, which is one of the most exclusive white stones in the world.

One of the supporters of the memorial is the famous actress and wife of the former mayor of Vienna, Dagmar Koller. She met Lady Di in 1986, when the Royal couple visited Vienna.

"I never saw such an amazing personality like her again. People queued just to glance at her, she was indeed the Queen of Hearts."

Mr Wurzinger and his project team are now looking for an appropriate place to put up the memorial. He said that it did not have to be in Vienna, although the City of Vienna proposed a place in Augarten Park. The bust does not need more space than two square metres.

Fans can contribute to the project and will be engraved on the plaque if donating an amount over 300 Euros. If the support is big enough, Mr Wurzinger plans to donate the remaining money to the Austrian Red Cross.

"This would also be Diana’s wish, because she always supported institutions like that."

Further information about the project can be found on the Internet: www.lady-diana.at or at Facebook.
