Danube tug sinks after ballast move

Two sailors had to be rescued from the icy cold waters of the River Danube after a tug boat sank on the River in the Lower Austria region.

The two sailors managed to jump into the water shortly before the boat went under after turning over.

The accident happened at Hainburg in the district of Bruck a.d. Leitha late on Monday according to river police.

The two crewmen on board – a 22-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man who were both from Amstetten – were rescued by a Slovakian freighter that pulled them out of the water.

The tug had been pushing a barge loaded with ballast that was supposed to be dumped into the Donau - but after the manoeuvre the captain put the total into full speed ahead and hit a wave from the deposited ballast that caused it to turn over.

The two sailors were taken to safety on the banks of the River where they were taken to the regional hospital in Hainburg and treated for mild hypothermia.
