Schönborn criticizes activists in Votiv church

Schönborn criticizes activists in Votiv church

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has slammed people who he accused of taking advantage of the asylum seekers in the Votivkirche in Vienna to further their own agenda.

Last week it looked like the refugees had already trusted the helpers and agreed to be relocated in proper accommodations.

Schönborn strongly criticized activists who have been supporting asylum seekers with the occupation of the church.

In his opinion, some activists are abusing the destitution of the refugees only to support their own ideology.

Schönborn thinks of the activists as financially well-off people who would not get their hands dirty by actually helping the refugees.

The cardinal says that organisations such as Caritas, Johanniter and people of the parish have been trying their best to help the refugees in both a legal and medical way.

The refugees have now reached the 31st day of their hunger strike.

Heinz-Christian Strache, the head of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), supports Schönborn’s criticism on the activists. He also points out that most of the refugees’ asylum statuses are unknown to the Ministry of Interior. Schönborn and Strache have hwoever usually not agreed and recently had an argument about the situation of asylum seekers.

Michael Landau, president of Caritas Vienna, appeals to an alertness of society regarding asylum seekers in Austria.

Recent events like the arson attack on a refugee camp in Vorarlberg and hostility towards the refugees in the Votivkirche show that fear can easily be spread amongst citizens say supporters of the refugees.
