Winter services have gritted 110,000 kilometres in the last two weeks, using 11,100 tons of salt to keep Austria's roads safe.
Last week, there were heavy snowfalls especially in the east of Austria. Josef Fiala, manager of the ASFINAG Service GmbH, which builds and maintains many of Austria's motorways, said: "We only see such heavy snow every 10 years. Our colleagues, in conjunction with the emergency crews, have done a splendid job. We would like to thank them very much."
The winter emergency services aren't finished – more gritters will be sent out before the beginning of the warm spring days. The salt-stocks all across Austria are sufficiently replenished. "Always ready", is the motto at ASFINAG, who have to work and prepare for the safety of motorist even on snow-free days.
ASFINAG and the winter service in numbers:
43 maintenance depots
2,178 kilometres of roads
36 secured rest-areas
89 service stations
92,000 salt-storage capacity
300 winter warning signs
