It's definitely the project of the superlatives.
The 250-million-Euro CityGate project will start to come to life this month – creating no less than 1,000 apartments and a shopping centre with top infrastructure in the 21st district of Vienna (Wagramerstraße 195). It is due to open in 2014.
The location is sought-after my home-buyers but also make up for a fantastic trades area. A direct link to the U1 metro line means shoppers and residents will be able to keep journeys short – that's an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 people hoping on and off once the complex opens.
The shopping centre will be home to 50 shops over 20,000m². Some essential leading brands have already been won over – such as Interspar, who will open a brand new 5,000m² hypermarket.
"Local supply" is said to be the leitmotiv for project leaders, besides fashion and lifestyle. Interspar Austria's manager Markus Kaser said: "Our main location for expansion is Vienna. In building new hypermarkets, we look for the highest footfall rates and the best locations. Those factors and the CityGate concept have won us over."
President of the Austrian labour chamber Stephan Mayer-Heinisch said: "The shopping centre will be the new meeting point of the area – there's a whole new quarter of the city appearing here."
Vienna's 21st and 22nd districts are two of Vienna's fastest-growing areas. With around 297,000 habitants, the two districts put together are bigger than Graz, Austria's second largest city.
The new complex, presented as "city in the city" offers a complete range of infrastructures. The Donaustadt school complex is planned just opposite the project which will cater for more than 800 pupils. A kindergarten school is also being added to the building. The two 80- and 100-metre high building are sure to become a landmark and shape the Vienna skyline.
The roof will be built into a recreational space for residents, who will also use a private underground garage. But that's not all: a park-and-ride facility with 1,470 places will also help lighten the rush-hours traffic
