Tanker fraud gang to appear in court

A gang of tanker drivers that managed to siphon off more than 1,000,000 euros of fuel and heating oil to sell on the black market to go on trial in Eisenstadt.

Prosecutors say that the five men aged between 29 and 59 had developed a system whereby they filtered off expensive contents due to be delivered usually to petrol stations or companies and then used a high pressure air hose to air into the tank instead of liquid.

The con was discovered when one petrol tank owner realised it was a substantial difference between what he should have had in his tanks and what he had been paid for when doing his bookkeeping.

Those affected were firms in Burgenland, Lower Austria and Styria .

Police say that they are also considering prosecuting those who purchased the oil and fuel from the men at knockdown prices.

They believe the gang operating since 2003, even though they were only discovered in June of this year.

The accused have until now indicated that they intend to plead guilty according to local media.
