Celeb UAE lawyer was a toilet salesman

Celeb UAE lawyer was a toilet salesman

The case of an Austrian doctor jailed for life after he was accused of carrying out the mercy killing of a quadriplegic patient even though he was not in the hospital at the time the death occurred took a bizarre twist after it was revealed his lawyer was in fact a toilet salesman without any legal qualifications.

The conman lawyer who claimed to have qualified as a lawyer in Germany not only tricked Austrian Eugen Adelsmayr, 50, but also dozens of other foreigners falsely accused of crimes in Dubai.

It now transpires that the lawyer would ask his clients to sign a contract in Arabic that they believed gave him the power to represent them over the allegations, but in reality the contract was giving him complete power of attorney over their property and assets.

One real estate agent said that he had signed a contract with  Mohammed Kawadri and then had to sit helplessly for five months on trumped up charges of which he was acquitted. When he came out of jail all of his property and his business had been sold.

Another claimed that after he had signed he found his hotel business sold - but only when he had been acquitted of the charges.

And in an even more bizarre twist it now turns out that the main witness in the case against Adelsmayr, 50, who was the former head of the intensive care unit at Rashid Hospital, was in fact a friend of his fake lawyer.

The case on which he was convicted involved allegations that he switched off Ghulam Mohammed’s life-support machine and increased his morphine dose, causing him to have a fatal heart attack. He always denied the charges and even after his conviction went on to protest his innocence.

Adelsmayr said after the hearing that two independent reports – by Dubai Health Authority and the Higher Committee for Medical Liabilty – had cleared him of any wrongdoing.

And he now believes that he would have probably never been accused had he not made the mistake of choosing Mohammed Kawadri as his lawyer.

In his book recently published about his ordeal, which he claimed he had always believed was part of a conspiracy, he wrote that his lawyer the Syrian Kawadri had damaged his case more than he helped – and now that suspicion has hardened after the latest revelations in German media about Kawadri.

The Justice Ministry in the United Arab Emirates has confirmed that the lawyer is not qualified and that his doctorate title from Bavarian University was invented. He is only licensed to operate as a salesman of sanitary products – namely toilets – they confirmed.

The Viennese lawyer Ingvild Moritsch that works in the country and discovered what Kawadri was up to said that he was extremely well-connected in the desert country including the fact that the main witness in the case against Adelsmayr was a friend of the toilet salesman lawyer.

Adelsmayr has so far managed to escape going back into jail over the conviction by remaining in Austria and refusing to travel back to the Middle East.

It also emerged that the former Austrian consul in the emirates Gerhard Dedic had been the one that urged people to use the fake lawyer. The relationship between the two was apparently a personal friendship.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that he was given an official recommendation first in June 2010 but had first started working for them in 1988, and that only after frequent complaints had they started looking into his qualifications.

Lawyer Moritsch said: "He always operates in the same way – he gives his victims a contract to sign which they believe is to deal with the court case and is in fact a general power of attorney over all of their affairs."

Real estate agent Ferdinand Jordan said that as a result he had lost everything when he faced charges in 2007 - and had signed the paper.

And a German businessman who was in turn recommended to the lawyer by the German Embassy said he lost his company and his hotel. The diplomat that recommended him was later arrested in 2011 for trafficking in women.

Investigations about other details to do with Kawadri stalled by the fact that not much else is known other than the fact he is licensed to sell toilets – even his age is unsure as depending on the papers looked at he is between 61 and 73 years old.

The UAE is now looking into two dozen cases that the former toilet salesman was involved in and faces jail for fraud. The Austrian consul at that recommended him is also being investigated.
