Police warn Xmas market drinkers against drink driving

Christmas market fans are being urged to leave their cars at home so that drink-driving accidents in the capital are avoided this holiday season.

Christmas is just around the corner and with Advent markets open, festivities in full swing and office parties fast approaching, it is the time of year when most alcohol related accidents are likely to happen.

Figures from last year strongly indicated that much stricter controls on alcohol are necessary. In December 2011 15,000 people were breathalysed and 340 drink-drivers were removed from behind the wheel. There were 19 accidents involving drink-drivers and 22 seriously injured passengers.

Going against all reason and underestimating the strength of the punch they had consumed at Christmas markets, the drink-drivers did not hesitate to get back behind the wheel. But drivers should be more careful as due to the warmth of the beverage and its high sugar content, the alcohol in the punch travels quickly into the bloodstream.

Police are advising people to leave their cars at home and walk or use public transport to reach Christmas markets. Heavy fines and loss of driving license are only the small problems facing drink-drivers. Driving under the influence of alcohol is extremely dangerous and can kill. Police are also urging drivers to remember that they are not only responsible for their own lives but also for those of their passengers.
