Chainsaw vandal sought by police

Austrian police are hunting a man with a chainsaw who has been randomly chopping down trees in night time attacks.

So far dozens of cases of trees felled and then left have been registered in the districts of Pirka and Windorf in Austria.

Many of the trees have been felled in remote locations but others have been left across roads - in at least two cases causing an accident.

In the first accident a 38-year-old had his car written off when he hit a felled tree after spotting it too late, and 50 meters away in the opposite direction a similar accident was avoided when the driver braked in time.

The third accident happened when a driver hit a tree - but then drove off without reporting the incident. Police however recovered parts of the wreckage from the car at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "A car travelling at speed that hits a tree could result in an accident with serious consequences. Up until now we have been lucky - but we are appealing for anyone that can help with out enquiries to get in touch."
