Cathedral reopened after arson attack

Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has officially reopened the cathedral in Wiener Neustadt after it was badly damaged by an arson attack on 6 March.

The investigation into the 15-year-old accused of starting the fire is continuing but in the meantime the repair work has been completed.

The cathedral in the city South of Vienna is regarded as one of the most important in Austria.

The blaze left the entire building severely damaged particularly from smoke and there was extensive work needed to clear carpets, walls and works of art as well as the organ and benches from the soot. In total the cost of the clean-up operation was close to €1 million.
