Austria's birth certificate to travel
An 1,000-year-old document in which Austria is referred to for the first time in history is making a journey. In two months’ time, the "Birth certificate of Austria" will travel from the Bavarian state archive to Burghausen on the border of Germany and Austria.
The document which dates back to the year 996 was written by Emperor Otto II on 1 November to Bishop Gottschalk of Freising in Germany. The letter refers to the small district of Neuhofen an der Ybbs in modern-day Austria as Ostarrichi, an area which he then donates to the abbey in Freising.
The certificate has been insured for 750,000 Euros prior to its journey. It will be transported in an elaborate protective box in a special spring-loaded transporter and its safety is of the upmost importance to experts in Germany. Head of the archive in Bavaria Gerhard Hetzer said, "The fascinating original cannot be replaced by a reproduction."
The document, which had remained in Freising until the Secularisation, will make another journey after 1,000 years in Munich arriving in Burghausen on 27 April for an Ostarrichi-Jubilee exhibition.
