The ski tourist village of Seefeld in Tyrol notched up the coldest temperature in Austria this weekend when it plunged to minus 28.3 degrees centigrade on Saturday night.
Experts said the cold spell would continue which was little comfort for the 13,000 homes and businesses in Salzburg left without heating after a power fault.
On Friday night as well Seefeld registered minus 22.9 degrees centigrade. Innsbruck and Salzburg were the coldest capital with minus 16.8 degrees centigrade, according to the Austrian Central Meteorological office ZAMG.
In total more than a dozen ZAMG temperature measuring stations in Austria registered minus 25 degrees centigrade or lower over the weekend.
Seefeld, a tourist destination with more than one million overnight stays each year, is one of the most popular Tyrolean tourist destinations especially for skiing in winter.
The record cold spell came as 13,000 homes in Salzburg were left without hot water or heating after the Mitte central heating power plant failed.
"The eastern Aigen and Parsch parts of the city as well as some of the central properties were affected," according to Martin Jager from Salzburg AG. Hospitals had to switch to emergency power.
Hospital spokesman Herbert Koutny said patients were not inconvenienced.
Local radio even appealed for people to loan heaters to affected homes until the situation was solved.
Hairdresser David Schwarz said: "We noticed it was getting colder and colder, in the end I was working in a down jacket."
