Almost four in 10 Austrians had a worse opinion of the country’s juridical system today than a few years ago, a new survey shows.
Research group Karmasin said yesterday (Thurs) that the reputation of Austria’s jurisdiction suffered among 24 per cent. The opinion of around two in three (66 per cent) had not changed while only 11 per cent of Austrians said they had a slightly or significantly better opinion of the juridical system today than some years ago.
Another result of the poll – for which 1,000 Austrians were interviewed – showed that just 12 per cent were "fully satisfied" with the work of court staff, lawyers, prosecutors and judges. Six per cent said they were not pleased at all while another 24 per cent said the juridical officials’ achievements were "rather not" satisfactory.
Six per cent told Karmasin they had no trust in the Austrian juridical system at all. Twenty-eight per cent said they "rather not trust" it. Only 15 per cent of the interviewed Austrians declared full confidence in the decision-making of juridical authorities.
Karmasin study leaders said many people were not really aware of the juridical system’s competences. They said some may mix up their decisions and police force’s actions. Experts stressed that a large number of Austrians were angered by the apparent lack of progress in clarifying a considerable number of cases of alleged corruption, abuse of office and fraud.
Several former government ministers, well-known lobbyists and businesspeople are entangled in the scandal-stricken occurrences. Many details about the cases were exposed by investigative journalists while state prosecutors faced criticism for failing to finalise their investigations. At the same time, the advocates of decision-makers accused of pocketing millions of Euros in illicit deals complained that reporters were apparently provided with secret information by sources close to juridical authorities on a regular basis.
Beatrix Karl of the People’s Party (ÖVP) said yesterday she wanted to concentrate on improving the image of Austria’s juridical sector this year as a consequence of the result of the Karmasin public opinion poll. The former science minister – who became federal justice minister in April 2011 – stressed that the media were focusing on "just a fraction" of all of the country’s court cases in their coverage.
Karl hinted that the fact that a comparably low number of legal wrangles and investigations had the full attention of the press and the public may be a key reason behind rising displeasure among citizens with allegedly slow prosecutors. The science minister – whose party forms a government coalition with the Social Democrats (SPÖ) of Chancellor Werner Faymann – stressed that state prosecutors and judges had to deal with thousands of cases a year. She also made aware of the complexity of the examinations against ex-politicians and entrepreneurs.
