Temperatures of minus 30 degrees predicted for parts of Austria

Temperatures of minus 30 degrees have been predicted for Saturday morning in parts of Austria, which with the wind chill factor will be minus 40 degrees in some places.

The province of Tyrol, which is expected to be worst hit, has warned of the potential dangers of the freezing weather and is recommending avoiding roads and using public transport instead.

Rudi Mair from the avalanche warning service has also warned of the real risk that the bitter winds will pose to skiers and snowboarders. Temperatures for those out on the slopes at 2,000 meters will get down to minus 25 degrees and with a winds of 35 kilometres an hour the wind chill is expected to be around minus 40 degrees.

Regional medical director, Franz Katzgraber has also advised those venturing outside to abstain from drinking alcohol to warm up and of course not to go out alone. Those already suffering from illness or who are particularly weak should take extra care. A fall outside in these conditions could be fatal if the person is injured and unable to move, he warns.

An 83-year-old woman died in Styria, Austria, on Wednesday after she fell whilst taking a walk in the middle of the afternoon. The pensioner was discovered dead by police less than four hours after she had ventured out for the walk.

The Air & Style snowboard competition is to be hosted tomorrow (Sat) in Innsbruck. The artic temperatures have sparked fear amongst organisers and the Red Cross who believe that temperatures may drop to minus 20 degrees. Team leader of the Red Cross, Albin Thaler has advised that people dress warmly, wearing as many layers as possible and use good shoes with thick socks.

Some 50 helpers from the Red Cross will be present at the snow sports event and two emergency doctors. With very few tickets remaining organisers are expecting large numbers of visitors in the area and as such have provided heated tents and gallons of tea to warm spectators.

Increased pressure will also be on the emergency shelters in Innsbruck over the weekend and particularly on road side assistance.
