Firemen lift stag to safety from frozen river

Firemen lift stag to safety from frozen river

Firemen were called out to rescue a stag stuck in ice and snow in Austria on Friday afternoon. The animal had got stuck in an icy river bed and was unable to get out without the help of the emergency services.

A team consisting of gamekeepers, members of the road maintenance depot and a vet worked with firemen to help rescue the stranded stag at around 2.30pm on Friday in Dienten am Hochkönig. According to a press release from the the fire service in Dienten on Saturday, the animal, who was stuck in the river bed, was completely exhausted by the time help arrived.

During the rescue operation the stag slipped off a frozen waterfall and dropped into the icy water below. The vet and another member of the team also broke through the icy surface of the water and dropped into the freezing river but no one was injured.

The stag was given an anaesthetic by the vet and was lifted to safety via crane by the Pongau road maintenance team.
