Four horses have been killed in a fire in a stable in Lehen, Austria. The fire is thought to have been triggered by the horse’s urine.
A 47-year-old from Upper Styria noticed the smoke rising from his rented stables early on Saturday morning and immediately contacted the emergency services.
The fire was quickly contained by the fire brigade and only the floor of the stable was damaged. Two horses died at the scene and a two further horses later as a result of the thick smoke.
Extensive investigations have revealed the horse’s urine to be responsible for the fire. The stables and surrounding building had been disinfected with quicklime which reacted with the urine, setting the straw, hay and sawdust on fire. Police estimated the damage on Wednesday to be about 40,000 Euros.

Dear Austrian Times - I teach technical large animal emergency rescue (TLAER) all over the world and we do research and response to barn fires. I would like to get the contact information for the department that did this investigation because we want to find out the conditions that something like this could happen - many people use these products in their barns without causing fires. This is very significant to the horse industry if true. Please provide them with my email address and website and encourage them to contact me. Thank you very much for your time and assistance.
