Seven people died on Austria’s roads in the second week of December with three people losing their lives over the extended holiday weekend.
In the week from 5 until 11 December four drivers and three pedestrians were killed in road accidents in the regions of Styria, Vienna, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
In one of this series of fatal road incidents a 58-year-old man was killed after his vehicle unexpectedly came off the road and overturned. The accident took place in the district of Mistelbach in Lower Austria on 10 December and according to police the man died instantly.
According to the home office four of the accidents came about due to inappropriate speed, two as a result of inattention and carelessness by the driver and one because of the pedestrian himself. One of the four drivers killed in the accidents was not wearing a seatbelt.
In comparison to last year, fatal traffic accidents are down from 526 to 501, an even further reduction from 2009’s figures which stood at 605 deaths on Austrian roads.
