The number of xenophobic felonies is increasing.

Racial hate crime rate rises

The number of xenophobic felonies is increasing.

The federal interior ministry announced yesterday (Tues) that police and prosecutors registered 580 breaches of law with xenophobic, far-right, racist, islamophobic and anti-Semitic background last year, 28 per cent more than in the previous year. The ministry – which is headed by People’s Party (ÖVP) official Johanna Mikl-Leitner –  explained that 48.6 per cent of these crimes were clarified, which is a four per cent improvement compared to 2009.

Only a few days ago, a Lower Austrian man was sentenced to six months behind bars by a court in Wiener Neustadt for celebrating the birthday of late Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. The defendant, 54, was also found guilty of glorifying banned symbols like the swastika.

The report of the ministry of Mikl-Leitner – whose party cooperates with the Social Democrats (SPÖ) – also shows that the overall number of reported crimes was 535,745 in 2010, which is a 10-year low. Salzburg (minus 14 per cent) and Lower Austria (minus 12.9 per cent) registered the sharpest decreases of Austria’s nine provinces. Police in Vorarlberg managed to solve most of reported felonies (57.1 per cent) last year. Officers in Burgenland did second-best (53.8 per cent).

The annual crime report reveals that cases of corruption reported to the police and juridical officials rose by 12 per cent from 2009 to 2010. It also discloses that Austrians reported almost 4,000 possible child pornography and sex tourism crimes in 2010.

The announcement of this figure comes just days after reports that a man from Braunau in Upper Austria could be prosecuted for shipping child porn movies from Thailand to Austria. Police found 36 underage pornography DVDs at the 54-year-old man’s home.

the same thing to me as He did to the disciples, â??Because you have so lltite faith. A lot of the times we live with the title of being Christians but in our lives the power of Christ is not put into effect and we live just as the same as all the other nonbelievers do. In times of financial difficulties or whatever struggles we may be going through, as Christians we have hope and victory in Christ that with Him we have the power to overcome anything no matter how difficult and impossible the situations may seem. However, just as I discovered with myself not living the life as a God's child should, I too often did and said' many things without exercising authentic faith. For me it was when things were unclear and everything seemed to be out of place; I couldn't say and know in my heart with faith that, But still God is going to help me get through this. But what gave me a wake up call was that God was more interested in helping me practice authentic faith rather than convicting me and just leaving me there feeling bad for having so lltite faith. Through this God revealed my lack of faith and allowed me to re-examine my walk with Him and to put my hope and trust in Him again. So to finish my thought in response to your sharing, Amen to placing our hope on our unseen God, our Provider because there is no other way to live the life with complete joy and peace other than having hope and faith in our God. And for those of you who feel that God has brought the same kind of revelation in your life, confess your weaknesses to God and just pray to Him and ask for His help. He will never leave us alone in times of our weaknesses and struggles. And on a side note I really do pray that others who read the devotionals will be blessed just as I have been because really there is nothing greater than being empowered by God's words in our daily lives.

Two teenage girls go missing as they fly from Austria to fight in Syria
Two teenager girls who say they have left Austria to fight in Syria have trigged an international search operation from the Austrian police. The two - a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old - left identical letters behind telling their families goodbye and that "we will meet in in Paradise". The letters told of their plans to go to Syria to "fight for Islam". The parents of the girls reported that their children had gone missing last week and since then the police tracked them to Turkish city of Adana, where they had flown to from Austria - after that the police lost track of the girls. Adana is 75 miles northwest of Aleppo, a city that became a major battleground during the civil war taking place in Syria. Police spokesman Thomas Keiblinger say that the police are taking the farewell letters "very seriously" and are now conducting an international search for two teenage girls who left farewell letters announcing plans to "fight for Islam" in Syria. Both girls come from families who immigrated from Bosnia but have not been fully identified by Austrian police.
