Jail for dog owner over dog mess

A 52-year-old man has been jailed for failing to pick up the mess from his two Great Dane dogs.

Vienna city council introduced tough new laws to crack down on owners who allow their pets to foul city walkways after a campaign by residents.

The resulting bylaw forced dog owners to collect dog waste in special plastic bags available in dispensers throughout the city and then to dispose of it by putting it in city waste bins - instead of allowing it to remain on the pavement.

But the unrepentant dog owner argued that he had purchased the giant sized dogs before he knew about the law and it was impossible to fit the dog mess left by his two great Danes inside the plastic bags.

He said: "Each one eats over two kilos of raw meat per day, plus biscuits and other stuff – what comes out just doesn't fit in the bags the city council provides."

But that argument failed to impress council officials who find him 1,380 euros.

When he said he was unable to pay they took him to court - that resulted in him being jailed for two days after he was reported by the dog mess bounty hunters.

The dog bounty hunters – known locally as the "Waste Watchers" – work from six a.m. to 11 o'clock at night handing out fines of up to 2,000 Euros for breaches in the law on dumping of waste and fouling of walkways. They work for the city's rubbish collection service the MA48.

About time! Now what about the people spitting on your footpaths. IT DOESN'T ENCOURAGE TOURISTS.
