Duo nick bikes to buy drugs

A Viennese couple have admitted the theft of more than a dozen bicycles in Lower Austria.

The pair, aged 68 and 48, were put in custody after making contradicting statements yesterday (Tues). The married couple were stopped in a random traffic check in Deutsch-Wagram near Gänserndorf. Police questioned them after discovering bolt cutters on the back seat.

The residents of Vienna eventually admitted to having stolen 15 bicycles worth at least 10,000 Euros in towns across the province since February. The thieves explained they illegally sold the bikes in Vienna to finance their drug addictions.

Over 2,000 bicycles are nicked in Austria each month, according to figures provided by federal police officials.
