Traffic death toll down

The number of people killed on Austrian roads significantly declined year on year in the first half of 2010.

Statistik Austria announced today (Weds) that 247 people had been killed on roads across the country between January and June of this year, down by 14 per cent compared to the 287 who were killed in the same period of last year.

The number of injured people declined by 8.3 per cent year on year to 20,352, the federal statistics body added.

The number of injured children aged 14 and younger dropped by 12.2 per cent from the first six months of 2009 to the same time span this year when 1,337 kids were harmed in traffic.

These figures come days after Traffic Club Austria (VCÖ) presented a new safety checklist for children and their parents in a bid to reduce the number of children injured on their way to school.

The independent traffic research body said its list of things parents should consider regarding their kids’ way to school was available on www.vcoe.at.

Children in the eastern provinces of Burgenland, Vienna and Lower Austria went back to school on Monday after their nine-week summer holiday, with students in Austria’s other six provinces to follow next week.
