Austria has the seventh-highest share of foreigners among the European Union’s (EU) members.

Austria makes top 10 in EU foreigners share ranking

Austria has the seventh-highest share of foreigners among the European Union’s (EU) members.

Eurostat, the European Commission’s (EC) statistics agency, said today (Tues) 10.3 per cent of the 8.5 million people living in the country last year did not have Austrian citizenship.

Luxembourg topped the comparative survey of the EU’s 27 member states with 43.5 per cent, followed by Latvia (17.9 per cent) and Cyprus (16.1 per cent).

Eurostat announced 11.9 million of the 31.86 million foreigners living in the EU were citizens of other EU countries, while the rest were third country countrymen (7.2 million Africans; four million Asians; 3.3 million Americans).

Immigration issues are currently dominating the Vienna city election campaign as the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) mostly focuses on integration issues. Heinz-Christian Strache’s party is tipped to improve their share after garnering just 14.8 per cent in the 2005 ballot.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) Mayor Michael Häupl branded the FPÖ’s campaign as "inhuman and racist".

The SPÖ holds an absolute majority in the federal capital’s parliament thanks to the 49.1 per cent it won in the 2005 vote. It is expected to meet the People’s Party (ÖVP) for coalition talks in case of a defeat.

Meanwhile, Viennese dailies report that Strache has begun wearing a bulletproof vest at campaign events after a series of murder threats. The FPÖ Vienna’s kickoff campaign party at the Lugner City last week was shattered by a stink bomb attack while hundreds of left-wingers demonstrators gathered outside the shopping centre.
