Residents of an Upper Austrian town have been given the go ahead to drink tap water after a recent study found it contained bacteria.
Research carried out earlier this week revealed that there were coliforms in tap water in Attnang-Puchheim in the province’s Vöcklabruck district. The germs can cause various infections.
Town hall officials decided to provide the around 9,000 citizens with water from a well not connected to the general water supply network.
Now a more detailed study showed that the water did not contain any bacteria.
Social Democratic (SPÖ) Mayor Peter Groiß said today (Fri) he was relieved hearing the news. He explained: "The second check found that the previous contamination level was lower than initially feared."
