Majority say computer science matters the most

Computer science has been revealed to be Austrians� most important school subject.

Pollsters IMAS, who interviewed around 1,000 Austrians aged 16 and older, said today (Thurs) 51 per cent named computer science as the key subject, while 40 per cent said learning languages mattered the most these days.

Latin, Greek and religious studies are considered least important, according to the IMAS survey.

Meanwhile, a leading education researcher has called for the introduction of an "IT licence" to make children aware of the World Wide Web�s dangers.

Speaking at a recent platform discussion in Vienna, German scientist Barbara Br�ning said young students should be given guidelines for surfing the internet in new school subjects as cyber-mobbing incidents were on the rise everywhere.

Dozens of schools across Austria banned access to Facebook, MySpace and similar social network platforms earlier this year.

Eighty-three per cent of Austrian children aged between six and 14 go online on a daily basis, while one in five teens said they had at least once become victims of mobbing on the internet.

Around two of the overall 8.5 million Austrians are registered on Facebook, but only half of them access and update their accounts on a regular basis.
