Probably no Austrians among Love Parade dead

Austrian authorities said today (Mon) they had no information about Austrians among the 19 people killed at a music event in Germany on Saturday.

Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, said neither his office nor the Austrian embassy in Berlin have so far been informed about possible Austrian victims.

He stressed it was still too early to officially confirm that none of the visitors of the Duisburg festival who died were Austrians.

Nineteen people were killed in a mass panic at a tunnel leading to the main area of the Love Parade techno festival.

Organisers of the event have come under fire over claims the entrance was too narrow to cope with the crowds. Prosecutors have already started checking the allegations.

The incident sparks memories of the 2005 Frequency Festival at the Salzburgring racing track where 31 people were injured when a bridge, located in the mega event’s main area, collapsed.
