Vienna underground crashes against buffer

A train driver was injured after steering his Vienna U-Bahn wagon into a bumper on Saturday, it has emerged.

A spokesman for the city’s public transport agency Wiener Linien said "significant damage" was caused in the incident at the U2 Stadion station but failed to give a figure.

He explained today (Mon): "The driver injured his hand and his head. He was able to leave the hospital after a quick treatment," the spokesman said, adding that human error was most likely the reason for the incident, but declining to comment on whether action would be brought against the driver.

No passengers were on board at the time.

The Stadion station incident comes only a few weeks after a packed U6 underground train derailed near Westbahnhof station at around 20 kilometres per hour. No one was injured in the incident.

Wiener Linien had 811.8 million passengers in 2009, up by 8.2 million rides year on year. This means Vienna has the highest share of public transport in Austria.
