Vienna pensioner dies after tram smash

An elderly Vienna woman died after a tram slammed into her yesterday (Tues).

Police in the city’s Simmering district said today the 87-year-old pensioner was hurled back onto the pavement as she tried crossing the street at an unmarked spot.

Officials said the woman was suspected of having missed the oncoming line 6 tram. Its driver slammed on the emergency brake but this failed to avoid the tramcar from colliding into the woman.

She was rushed to hospital but died of serious head injuries a few hours later. The packed tram’s passengers and its driver survived the accident unharmed.

A motorcyclist is meanwhile recovering from spine injuries after he collided with a tram in the city’s district of Penzing recently. The 18-year-old overtook a car which stopped to let the line 52 tram pass before he rode into it.
