'Cow gang' attack German couple

A German couple have told how they were attacked by cows after travelling more than 800 kilometres to spend a stress-free holiday in the Austrian Alps.

The 42-year-old banker – who did not want to be named – said today (Mon): "My wife and me looked for a quiet place to stay a couple of days to wind down. We found an ad offering a mountain hut for rent and thought this is exactly what we were looking for."

The pair drove more than 800 kilometres to reach the hut near the small town of Schöder in Styria’s Murau district.

The man said: "We wanted to walk to a nearby pub after arriving on Friday night when suddenly ten cows surrounded us. I unleashed our dog so she can escape. My wife suffered serious bruises when the cows attacked her. She eventually managed to lock herself in the hut, while I jumped into our car."

He added the cows damaged his car before they eventually made a move.

His wife needed treatment at a clinic in Tamsweg, Salzburg.

The couple decided to continue their stay despite the unpleasant incident.
