Heavy rainfall inundates parts of Vienna
A cloudburst inundated parts of Vienna late yesterday (Thurs) afternoon, affecting the districts of Ottakring, Neubau, Mariahilf, Hietzing and Penzing the most.
Firemen were called out 130 times between 5pm and 9pm to pump water out of cellars and buildings.
City energy provider Wien Energie said that some 20,000 households in Josefstadt, Ottakring and Rudolfshheim-Fünfhaus districts were without electricity after 5pm but that it had been restored in two-thirds of them by 9:30pm and in 90 per cent by 11:30pm.
People in the cinema at Lugner City had to be evacuated after it filled with knee-high water.
Service between the Volkstheater and Schweglerstraße stations on the U3 underground had to be stopped shortly after 5pm when water covered the tracks near the Westbahnhof or western railway station, possibly because of ongoing renovation work there. Service was back to normal this morning,.
The heavy rain caused delays on most other public transport in the city.
Firemen were also called out in many areas of Lower Austria close to Vienna to pump water out of cellars and buildings.
