A chopper from ÖAMTC’s Kitzbühel base carried out the motorist club fleet’s overall 200,000th rescue outing yesterday (Thurs).
A spokesman for Austria’s biggest car club said today that it took the 16 "Christophorus" helicopters an average of 13 minutes to arrive at an accident after being called up.
The helicopter fleet, which started operating in 1983, makes an average of 20 flights per day. ÖAMTC employs around 50 pilots and a 500-person support crew.
News of the 200,000th ÖAMTC fleet operation came after a German study had claimed that 22 of Austria’s overall 38 rescue helicopter bases could be closed. Other organisations as well as clinics and police run their own chopper rescue services.
Researchers at the Bavarian Institute for Emergency Medicine and Medical Management found last October that a total of 16 helicopters was enough for necessary missions on any given day.
The body’s study was commissioned by the Lower Austrian health insurance company (NÖGKK).
