Greens leader Eva Glawischnig revealed last night (Thurs) she will vote for incumbent president Heinz Fischer in next month’s presidential election.

Greens chief to vote Fischer

Greens leader Eva Glawischnig revealed last night (Thurs) she will vote for incumbent president Heinz Fischer in next month’s presidential election.

Glawischnig said in a TV interview that Fischer – a former Social Democratic (SPÖ) president of the federal parliament – "did a decent job". But she attacked the Freedom Party’s (FPÖ) candidate Barbara Rosenkranz, calling her "a disgrace for Austria". The Greens’ boss appealed to the rivalling opposition party to make a U-turn on their nomination.

Rosenkranz, a mother-of-ten, has come under fire for making ambiguous statements regarding Austria’s Nazi past.

Asked whether she doubted the existence of gas chambers at Nazi concentration camps, the head of the FPÖ’s Lower Austrian department, recently said: "My view of history is the one of a person who visited Austrian schools between 1964 and 1976."

Rosenkranz referred this statement to the fact that the curriculum at most of the country’s schools failed to feature World War Two at that time.

The FPÖ MP recently held a press conference to announce that she wanted to "totally disassociate" herself from Nazi era crimes – only two days after market-dominating newspaper Kronen Zeitung appealed to her to do so in a column. The right-wing daily backs her candidacy, and its publisher Hans Dichand hailed Rosenkranz "a courageous mother".

Rosenkranz said yesterday that "no reasonable person" would deny the existence of gas chambers at the Nazi’s forced labour camps.

Rosenkranz has also been attacked by political opponents over the journalistic activities of her husband Horst-Jakob Rosenkranz who has been publishing far-right magazine "Fakten".

The conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), the Greens and the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ) all decided not to nominate own candidates.

Fischer, who took office in 2004, could garner around 70 per cent of the votes on 25 April, according to polls.
