Fischer and IAEA DG discuss nuclear proliferation

President Heinz Fischer met the new director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, yesterday (Weds) where the two discussed nuclear proliferation and disarmament.

The president’s office said the two men had exchanged views on Iran’s intention to build nuclear weapons and the question of additional international sanctions against the country.

The office declined to give details but added that Fischer had reiterated Austria’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and a strong non-proliferation regime.

Fischer also assured Amano of Austria’s support of IAEA, based in Vienna’s UNO City with 2,300 employees, the office said.

Amano was elected new head of IAEA by 1,500 delegates from the agency’s 150 member states meeting at Vienna’s International Center last September.

Amano had been nominated by a two-thirds vote of IAEA’s Governing Council in July. He succeeded Egyptian Mohammed ElBaradei, who decided not to seek a fourth term after heading the agency for 12 years. He assumed his new position on 1 November.

The new agency head said he would pursue two goals during his four-year term in office: preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and increased peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Amano came to Vienna in 2005 as head of the Japanese mission to IAEA. He has been a Japanese diplomat since 1972 and worked extensively on nuclear issues.
