More snow expected on north side of Alps

As much as 30 centimetres of snow is expected on the north side of the Alps from Vorarlberg to the Schneeberg mountain near Vienna, the Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said today (Mon).

Agency meteorologist Claudia Riedl in Salzburg said 30 centimetres of new snow is likely at 1,500 metres and 50 centimetres possible at elevations above 1,500 metres. She added the snow line would rise from east to west in Austria.

After that, though, the weather will begin to warm up, with highs of 10 on Wednesday and 14 on Thursday predicted.

New snow had already made its presence felt this morning on the southern motorway (A2) on the steep stretch near the Wechsel mountain where it enters the Alps south of Vienna.

Trucks that had skidded out of control blocked snow ploughs from working, and a number of accidents occurred. The motorway had to be closed for an hour in each direction to allow police to unravel the mess. Resulting jams extended for up to 15 kilometres.

Police made chains mandatory for trucks on that stretch of the motorway. No injuries have been reported.

New snow will also raise the danger of avalanches in Lower Austria, where the danger level is expected to be four tomorrow in the western part of the province. It was at level three in many areas today.

Authorities warned ski tourers to be "careful and behave passively."
