Three injured when hayloft collapses

Three people were seriously injured Saturday night when a hayloft hosting a party collapsed, sending two of them plunging four metres to the floor, police said yesterday (Sun).

More than 800 people were in an old farm building in Upper Austria’s Schärding district when the accident happened shortly after 1am.

A 47-year-old man from Schwanenstadt in Vöcklabruck district and a 46-year-old woman from Bavaria fell to the floor, and falling timber hit a 15-year-old boy from Schärding on the head.

Rescuers took the three to a hospital in Schärding, where doctors said the woman had a broken back, the Bavarian brain concussion and the boy a serious head injury.

The event’s organisers may be prosecuted, police said, since they had not obtained a necessary permit for the party.
