Morning after pill information campaign to begin
An information campaign on the morning after birth-control pill is to be launched by the health ministry, Social Democratic (SPÖ) Health Minister Alois Stöger announced yesterday (Thurs).
The campaign would feature posters, folders and website address www.notfallpille.at, he said.
He added that an emergency means of preventing a pregnancy should not take the place of normal methods and that the morning after pill would not terminate an existing pregnancy or protect users from sexually-transmitted diseases.
The minister also warned that the morning after pill might not be effective if the user did not know the exact time of her last sexual intercourse.
SPÖ Women’s Minister Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek welcomed the news about the campaign. She said: "We hope that the prescription free morning after pill will help prevent unwanted pregnancies. This is good information for many women."
Freedom Party (FPÖ) medical spokesman Andreas Karlsböck, however, said it was shameful for the minister to allow himself to be exploited by the pharmaceutical industry and to promote the "dangerous morning after pill."
The pill has been available at pharmacies without prescription since last December.
